Tasty steak house with a novel twist. Hot plates, salt rubs and butter served with the steak allows you to heat and flavour your steak. Good choice of cuts and other non-steak dishes (although why would you visit and not have a steak?). Pricey but that is to be expected for a steak house near Covent Garden. Service was Ok, place was very busy and the waiters were quite rushed but overall an easy, tasty steak house.

I really liked this place, and yet I don't think I'd ever go again. Good points first, there's plenty of great locations and they all have a really suave decor. The service is quick, responsive and friendly - plus the added bonus of being able to reserve and not having to queue for a table (which now seems to be commonplace at the best London restaurants) is a big plus! The food was delicious and there was an excellent range of drinks, wines etc. so all good on that front! Here's where I find issue though. So most of the charm of Steak and Co is that the food comes out on a hot slab, where you pick 1 type of butter (I went for garlic), 1 type of seasoning (sea salt) and a sauce (peppercorn). You then get a hunk of slightly cooked meat on a hot stone with your three mini bowls of sauce, seasoning and butter. Without any instruction you're then meant to just kind of cook it yourself... I mean, I like my steak medium rare but I didn't really know how long to leave it on for. I'd never cooked the type of steak the wait or recommended! Do I add all three of my garnishes? Butter, salt and sauce? Or do I alternate? This is all at the same price as a normal steak place, actually more pricey than some of my favourites! Given that I'm picking the ingredients, and cooking it myself... It seems a bit steep! I kind of go to a restaurant to avoid cooking myself, this wasn't as fun and simple as it should have been. Given waiters often have to stand around a bit while people move around the restaurant, I can't help but feel that as the steaks cook more and more on their hot stones, many will arrive overdone for most tastes. Some of our table were in the toilet when their food arrived, and came back to their steaks practically well done... Before they even had a chance to season and butter it up. I really liked the novelty, and the service was top - but I'm not sure if it's the type of place I would revisit, and I feel like to be any more than a novelty the formula needs work. The Steak should really come on a plate to be put ONTO the stone to begin cooking, and there needs to be a schpiel from the waiters. Maybe do a quick rundown of how to best season your steak, talk about how long to leave it on for, or have little sand timers? It's a nice place, I was impressed with the food and service, but there's definitely something missing to justify this price point!
