Josh Place
Having been a fan of Ghengis Grill back on the West Coast, I will not be coming back to this location anytime soon. Unfortunately the greeting at the door was the best facet of this experience. Granted it was nice having the door timidly propped open for us, even if the threshold ahead held terrible things in store for us. Looking back, the reason why a server had time to greet us at the door was because there were just 3 other diners finishing up their Friday night meals. THAT should have been a soaring red flag, but I was too excited to Build-my-own Stir Fry to truly take notice. Service here can summed up into 1 category: RESTRAINED From the first hello, every employee here seemed to know what to do, but simply wasn't applying their skills. It wasn't until later that we would find out why. Once at the ingredient bar, we soon realized that fresh wasn't on the menu, and tidy wasn't on the agenda. In the middle of building our masterpieces, a commotion began at the grill counter. It was clear that a food allergy miscommunication was beginning to unfold, and it was so distracting that the entire place (all 9 of us, including payroll) had their eyes on the mother who was not handling the situation well at all. We managed to drop off our food at the counter to be cooked and make it back to our corner to watch the show, unsure when or whether or not our bowls would make it back to us before midnight. At one point, the leader of the commotion successfully made it behind the counter and began stirring around everyone's food atop the infamous 'Ghengis grill'. The cook on duty looked surprisingly calm, almost as if this happened all the time. Finally, we were served what I can only assume was a mixture of mine, and everyone else's stir fry, which unfortunately was quite unappetizing. My hot date said hers tasted good, but since I'm not one to complain in an already uncomfortable situation, we paid our bill and headed for the door. It was in this moment that we realized the mother of the allergically concerned child was the bartender of this mysterious establishment. No, on second stare it was not the mother at all, in fact this was the store manager. After our shock had sunk in for half a millisecond, the entire night rewound in our minds and it all became clear as mud that all along, this semi-psycho mom that all the employees were so un-phased by was actually their boss, dressed in regular clothes. Uniforms never seemed so important to me until that moment. I hope to be a fan of the Grill again someday, but the straw that broke the camel's back would be released later that night when my wife and I both were touched by the horrors of food poisoning. Until new management, Ghengis Grill Sugar Land location. You miss actually be missed, but only for the distant memory of what you used to be, not the nightmare you have become.
